James Bartelt, co-principal percussion
Jim Bartelt comes originally from Charlottesville, Virginia. He retired after 24 years with US Air Force and Army Bands worldwide, including his final position as Principal Percussionist of the Air Force Band of the West in San Antonio.
Outside of military ensembles, Jim has performed with the San Antonio, Birmingham (Alabama), Richmond (VA), Corpus Christi, Mid-Texas, and Victoria (TX) Symphonies. He was also a fellowship participant with major summer festivals in Aspen and Graz, Austria and with the East-West International Orchestra in Germany.
Jim has drummed and recorded for Country bands, theatre productions, sacred music, and numerous jazz combo appearances. His regular summer engagement is with the Taneycomo Festival Orchestra in Branson, Missouri.
Jim served on the Percussive Arts Society Education Committee and taught for numerous high school programs in Texas, Virginia, Kentucky, and other states. He has presented clinics and master classes at both the scholastic and university levels, in the US and overseas, and is active both as a soloist and adjudicator. He is an Artist Faculty member at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Michigan, and has maintained a busy private studio from which his students gained acceptance to some of America's finest music colleges.
Jim earned his Bachelor of Music in Percussion Performance from Virginia Commonwealth University and his Master of Music at Florida State, where he taught applied lessons and Percussion Methods as a graduate assistant. His various teachers and coaches include Alan Abel, Donald Bick, Cloyd Duff, Doug Howard, Jim Rago, and Gary Werdesheim.
He is a Professional Endorser for Majestic timpani and Coe keyboard mallet instruments, and an Educational Endorser for GroverPro/SilverFox Percussion.
In addition to all good music, Jim enjoys European travel and cuisine. He is excited to be part of a growing and dynamic Symphony VIVA team!
