Letter from the Artistic Director
Friends, Family, Patrons, and Supporters of Alamo City Arts,
2022 has been an exciting year. Like many organizations Alamo City Arts faced challenges during and just after this pandemic. With support from the City of San Antonio, Community Partners, and most importantly, YOU, we have been able to flourish and help build a larger arts community here in San Antonio. In the spring of 2022 we debuted La Jolie Garden, directed by Susan Treviño in collaboration with Alamo City Symphony Viva. This ballet featured excerpts from Napoli, La Corsaire, Pas de Odalisques and Jardin Anime and was presented at the historic Fort Sam Houston Theatre. |
In July we were excited to collaborate with Eva's Heroes and deliver our sensory friendly Nutcracker camp, featuring special needs dancers and performers who brought our community the joys of Christmas in July.
In September the McNay Art Museum went live with an installation of vignettes produced by our organization in 2021. These digital performances were inspired by the different sculptures throughout the facility's gardens and are enjoyed by hundreds of visitors at the McNay every day.
In the fall Alamo City Dance Company had the opportunity to collaborate with all our incredible musicians, Symphony Viva, The Heart of Texas Concert Band and Memory Lane Dance Band during our Gilded Gala as well as premiere Seis Colores de Tejas, an original piece by our Ballet Master, Michael Landez. This was an incredible fundraising event that showcased everything Alamo City Arts has to offer. During Thanksgiving, Alamo City Dance Company continued its tradition of providing the entertainment for the Ford Holiday River Parade. The performance was televised for an audience of over 4.7 million viewers.
All this has been building to the show I am excited to bring you today, our 30th incarnation of the Nutcracker.
The performances we continue to deliver are made possible by the success of our Alamo City Arts Academy. We are now in our second year at our permanent facility and the school has grown substantially. We are thrilled to have Rosemary Tatum and Lorenzo Hall join our instructional team bringing their experience and creativity to our Academy students. We are adding more classes in the spring due to high demand of our pre-ballet program (ages 3-6) and pre-pointe classes (ages 10+).
Be on the lookout for performance opportunities in the spring including The Tales of Beatrix Potter and Fiesta which are open to all Academy students.
I am proud of the determination, dedication and skill our Alamo City Dance Company artistic team has shown to support Alamo City Arts’ mission of bringing the performing arts to the greater San Antonio community. Nothing feeds the souls of our city’s artists and brings joy to community members and patrons like the curtain rising on stage across the city. These performances would not have been possible without countless hours of planning and hard work by all the members of the Association and the many community volunteers.
Specifically, I’d like to thank Cory McRae. The organization would not be where it is today without his tireless commitment and leadership. He is truly the heart of our organization though he only likes to take credit for being the guy who delivers lunch. He is the foundation for all the wonderful opportunities our entire organization has received and his vision for the future continues to feed our mission. Thank you Cory for always grabbing lunch, and remembering I take extra ice in my tea.
I would also like to thank Susan Treviño for her guidance and dedication . Her beautiful artistic vision and endless talent is what makes our productions shine. She elevates us all to new levels of professionalism and has a steadfast dedication to our dancers. I am truly privileged to get to call her my friend.
I would also like to thank my tremendously talented staff at Alamo City Arts Academy. Lizzy Medrano, our pre-ballet coordinator and off-campus enrichment director, Chris Flores, our rehearsal assistant and Joe Moreno, our social media manager. Your hard work and talent help grow Alamo City Arts Academy and Alamo City Dance Company and I truly appreciate your help.
To our dancers and their families, thank you all for your dedication and commitment to the full run of our many productions this year. It continues to be an honor to be the director of Alamo City Dance Company and Alamo City Arts Academy and I promise to provide any dancer with unique performance opportunities throughout the city.
To a beautiful day and bright future,
Katie R. Hall
